Antique Marble Lions after Antonio Canova, 1792

May 20, 2017

A handsome pair of Carrara marble lions after the magnificent pair (Vigilant and Sleeping) created by Antonio Canova in 1792 for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII at St Peters in Rome.  Presumably from a grand architectural scheme.  Italy, late 18th to early 19th century.
